Need for Legalization of Recreational Marijuana

Need for Legalization of Recreational Marijuana

Twenty-three states and Washington D.C have allowed marijuana use for medical purposes. However, for recreational purposes, marijuana has been legalized in four states and the District of Columbia. Adults – 21 and older- can now transport, buy or possess up to an ounce of marijuana and six plants, in Alaska. Oregon voters followed the same suit. Adults can now possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana in public and 8 ounces in their homes. Is there a need for legalization of recreational marijuana?

Many people might question why pot is being legalized in the states. Well, we all know banning it wasn’t fruitful as it didn’t actually refrained people from using it. Instead, it provoked a majority of people, especially young ones, to go through the ‘experience’, just because it’s more fun to do something forbidden. Besides, a lot of people find restitution in smoking pot; why not let them do it with a clear conscience?

Contrary to popular belief – legalizing pot can bring about a lot of positive changes to our society. A lot of people think marijuana is an injurious addiction and nothing good comes of it. They’re right as well, but banning it out is a more severe problem than the drug itself. However, these aspects, a lot of people fail to see or ignore altogether. Looking at the statistics, banning marijuana was a mistake that has caused more harm than good. Marijuana does not bring addiction, but rather brings a harmless recreational solution.

Numerous advocates for legalization of pot are of the view that making it legal will help our society get rid of major crimes. Police will have additional time and cash to seek after more serious crimes like murder and violence. This would also help prosecutors and judges to concentrate on vicious law violations. One study appraises that across the nation pot sanctioning would spare governments $8.7 billion every year.

Many of the ‘crime organizations’ earn their cash through selling drugs – mainly weed. This cash, in turn, is then used to organize crimes and spread violence in the neighborhood after neighborhood. Legalization of recreational marijuana cuts off an important revenue stream for many dealers in the illegal drug business industry. This could result in saving a lot of lives while taking pressure off of law enforcement agencies.

Despite it being illegal, people around the globe purchase marijuana regularly. They do so in streets, dealing with shady drug dealers without any information about the dealer, as this is the only source they have. This often results in people buying low-quality drugs which can prove to be injurious to their health. This can be avoided by legalizing weed because let’s face it; banning it didn’t do any good. Making it legal would work to eliminate some of the risks that come from smoking a substance potentially laced with toxic ingredients.

The decriminalization of recreational marijuana would allow more people to use the drug for its believed health benefits which are the drug’s most beneficial use. A ton of people argues that the drug is an effective treatment for a range of conditions, including epilepsy, Crohn’s disease, posttraumatic stress disorder and multiple sclerosis. One needs to analyze the pros and cons of the legalization of marijuana and form a sound-based and well-researched opinion about it.
